The Art, Space + Nature postgraduate program begins with a two week field study in the remote Orkney Islands, north of mainland Scotland.

The 2009 field study was a collaborative project between Edinburgh College of Art and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

A group of around thirty students from inter-media, sculpture and landscape architecture disciplines, travelled to the northern isles, settling on the island of Hoy (one of the more rugged and unpopulated of the Orkneys).

The two weeks in Orkney are spent:

- Visiting Neolithic sites and former military bases
- Studying the abandoned architectural structures
- Learning about sustainability and alternative energy research initiatives (tidal power)
- Meeting local and visiting artists and documentarians
- Giving presentations about our personal practice
- Forming break-out groups to discuss future projects

The field study was an opportunity for cross-cultural and interdisciplinary collaboration, which resulted in an exhibition at the Pier Art Center on Orkney Island, Stromness and an exhibition at the Tent Gallery in Edinburgh's city centre.
